The Organised Life Project: Decluttering

Can you really declutter your whole house in one month? Can you really organise your entire life over the course of a year?

Yes, you can. We’re going to take this one step at a time. One focus a month. Just that, nothing more. Over the first month, we’ll declutter our homes. Then we’ll move on and gradually organise our entire lives. 

The Project Structure

Every week, we will have one main challenge, plus daily challenges. The blog posts will go live on a Monday, and you’ll also get an email from me if you’re signed up to the project. 

You can do as little or as much as you want. But the more you do, the more organised you will be! The weekly challenges will make the most difference, and the daily challenges will support the weekly challenge. That’s the plan, at least!

You can do the challenges in the way that suits you. If you have more time at the weekend, you might want to do all the daily challenges in one go. The daily challenge will probably take 10 minutes or so, and the weekly challenge might take a bit longer, but not much. 

I’ll be posting the daily challenges on my blog Facebook page and on Twitter, and we’ll also be discussing our progress in our Facebook group – you need to be on the mailing list to gain access to that. 

Month 1: Decluttering Focus

Our focus for the first month is decluttering. We’re going to declutter parts of our house over the whole month.

After that, we’ll move on to cleaning routines, organising our time, organising our finances, our wardrobes…. But we’ll take it one step at a time.

For now, decluttering.

I believe decluttering is important because it makes everything else simpler. Once we have clear surfaces in our homes, cleaning those surfaces becomes faster. If the children have fewer toys, it’s easier to put them away. If everything has a place, tidying up becomes easier, simpler and quicker. 

When you think about decluttering an entire house, it’s overwhelming. Not only that, it takes hours. It’s exhausting. One job leads to another and before you know it, you’ve run out of time.

Five Areas of Your Home

That’s why we’re going to break it down. We’re going to divide our homes into 5 areas, because there are 5 Mondays in January. Each week, we will focus on one area, and do a little bit each day. Each little bit will probably only take you 10-15 minutes. But if you put that together, 10 minutes a day in January, you’ll get 5 hours of decluttering done. That will make a huge difference to your home.

I know our homes and our layouts will be different, so feel free to adjust these weeks according to your own situations, but the plan I’m going to follow is:

Week 1: Kitchen

Week 2: Living Room (including children’s toys)

Week 3: Bedrooms and Office Space

Week 4: Bathroom and Entrance Hall

Week 5: Garage/Shed

You can adapt this structure to fit you and your house and family best, of course. 

I am really excited about this project. I know it is going to make a big difference to our homes, but I also hope it won’t be overwhelming.
